Beautiful Early 1960s Loden Green Wool Vintage Suit By Helen Rose

Occasionally, I consult with my fellow members at the Vintage Fashion Guild on a garment. Sometimes, to share a great find, but others to refine the date. With this suit, it was a case of both. We all agreed that it is a great design, and the date seems to fall in the 1962 - 65 range. The store label in question puts it to the earlier part of the 60s as well since Selman‘s changed their label in the mid decade. The fabric is a loden green wool suiting and the jacket has clean lines with a remarkable front design . The extra large fabric button closure uses an extended tab and a huge buttonhole. The straight skirt has a wide shaped and boned waistband that is visible at the jacket cutout. This suit is fully lined in green silk. Skirt has a center back nylon zipper. And it’s all beautifully made.

I wrote up a bio on Helen Rose for the VFG She was a well respected and successful film costume designer who moved into retail fashion in 958 until her retirement in 1972. Here’s a link: Helen Rose on VFG Piece:

1970s Chester Weinberg Novelty Weave Blazer

Chester Weinberg was only active with is own label a short time from 1966 to 1975, yet he left a mark. His work is always interesting. His fabric choices were distinctive. This is a simple blazer with a graceful fit and atypically narrow lapels for the time. The fabric is a textured weave. The juxtaposition of the heavy coarse grey fibers and the fine tan fibers gives this textile a great depth. The patch pockets are a nice touch. A complex cut would have been overkill with as textured a fabric as this. Fully lined in greige acetate.

1970s Boldly Printed Maurice Maxi Dress
Dramatic 1970s Maurice Print Maxi Dress

This is one dramatic print synthetic knit dress from the 1970s, I must say. The print is almost psychedelic! I do love the vibrant yellow, gold orange and pink swirling floral on the black ground. The  bodice is fitted with a scoop neckline, long slim sleeves and a nylon zipper back. The skirt is quite long and straight  and is a wrap style in the front. Fair warning - this wrap opens to the waist! As to the mysterious Maurice - his design aesthetic was certainly inspired by Pucci, much as were the Mr. Dino, Paganne and  Leonard labels.

Label: ILGWU ,  100% nylon and care label. Maurice is printed several times in the fabric.
